Fair Trade Lao Silk Scarves and Tea from Laos
Tea (Camellia sinensis)
The Bolovens Plateau is well known for its exceptional coffee and tea plantations. The fertile volcanic soil gives to the Shan Tea variety its distinctive taste. In the past this tea was exclusively selected for and served to the Chinese Emperors. Today Tea production is still run in a very traditional style. The leaves are processed on large metal plates over a log fire. Out of Camellia sinensis leaves many varieties of tea are produced and Mai Savanh Lao selected for you a special Green tea and Oolong tea.
It is an unfermented tea. It is made with the new tea shoots by applying the typical techniques of inactivation, rolling and drying. The health benefits of Green Tea are well documented. Its antioxidant - anti-ageing properties as well as the high concentration of catechin polyphenols, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) explains why this tea is so sought after.
This tea is half-fermented somewhere in-between green and black tea. Oolong means 'Dark Dragon Tea' in Chinese. It is the most popular tea in China. It is also commonly admitted that regular consumption of Oolong tea can have slimming benefits. Its infusion is mainly red in tone.
It is exclusively made out of hand picked and selected mulberry leaves. It features a fine flavor and a soft taste with a hint of wood. In Asian culture this tea has been consumed for ages for its curative properties. Mulberry leaf tea with no caffeine nor theine, is recognized for helping control blood sugar and cholesterol levels as well as hypertension.
Besides our original plain mulberry tea we also offer the following flavored mulberry teas:
Mulberry tea with stevia leaves: Stevia is a natural sweetener with a slight licorice taste having no impact on blood sugar levels. We grow our stevia on our farm in southern Laos and, like our mulberry tea, it is certified organic.
Mulberry tea with lemon basil leaves: An essential part of Asian cuisine, lemon basil adds a warm lemon/mint avor to our organic mulberry tea.
